Units

In the beginning of Chapter 6, we mentioned the meter, abbreviated m, the second, s, and the kilogram, kg, as the scientific units for length, time, and mass, respectively. Since then, we have encountered the quantities force, energy, pressure, and temperature, all of which have to be specified in units. In this section, you will find a summary of the scientific units – some of them mentioned at various places above, but here pulled together for convenient reference – for mechanical and thermal quantities.

Mechanical units are all expressible in terms of length, time, and mass, but they have been given names of their own.
